Description

This object is a HII region located 9000 light-years away in the constellation of Cassiopeia at a declination of +62 degrees. It has a diameter of 70 light years and an apparent diameter similar to that of our full moon (25 arc-minutes). Star formation is actively occurring in this region, with 50 young star objects identified so far.

This object has been saddled with the nickname of the Phantom of the Opera Nebula because of the 3 foreground dust regions that are superimposed on the HII region.

An interested formation paper is seen here.  The main exciting star for this object is BD+6039, indicated by the small arrow in the mouseover.

Seen at lower right in the image is the small but interesting object Sh2-172.

Stewart Sharpless created the Sharpless catalog of HII regions (emission nebulae) in 1959. The list is intended to be comprehensive north of declination −27°. The catalog prefix is Sh2 because this list of 313 objects is his second catalog version.  My Sharpless collection is about 2/3 complete and is seen here.
