Description

Caldwell 60, also known as NGC 4038 or the Antennae Galaxies, is part of a fascinating pair of interacting spiral galaxies located about 65 million light-years away in the constellation Corvus. These galaxies are nicknamed the Antennae because of the long tails of stars and gas that stream out from them, resembling antennae. The collision of these two galaxies is triggering a burst of star formation, with the intense activity creating a pinkish hue in the galaxies. This violent encounter is expected to continue for hundreds of millions of years, eventually leading to the galaxies merging into a single, larger elliptical galaxy. Fascinating stuff !
