Description

The California Nebula (AKA NGC 1499/Sh2-220) is an emission nebula in the constellation of Perseus, so named due its resemblance to the outline of the US State. It is 1,000 light years from Earth, and its fluorescence is due to excitation of Hydrogen beta gas in the nebula by the nearby energetic star Xi Persei (AKA Menkib). Processed using the Hubble palette.
