Description

We decide to post this image of the Planetary Nebula IC 5148 although it carries a lot of defects related to the acquisition (pb of CCD temperature, flats, reflections ...).Our scope with its Fd of 8 is also not the most suitable (look at the image with a scope of 1m here: https://astrob.in/iokfgl/0/) But this image is nevertheless interesting because we can begin to distinguish the ionize halo that surrounds it (thanks to a treatment a little pushed I admit) and that it is not very often imaged.Planetary nebulae are expanding envelopes of gas and dust ejected by a star during its evolution into a red dwarf or white dwarf. These are relatively rare objects, but they are important for scientists studying the chemical evolution of stars and galaxies. Although IC 5148 (a large planetary nebula) was discovered in 1894, there is not yet much information about it. The nebula is located in the constellation of the crane at a distance of 3000 light-years from Earth. At an expansion rate of 50 km / s, it is considered one of the fastest planetary nebulae known. To determine more characteristics for IC 5148, the researchers used spectrometers on the VLT. In particular, they discovered that the nebula had a set of unusual structures in the halo. They look like red-heated ionized material. The researchers have not yet determined the nature of the emission in the halo of IC 5148. They point out that the inner area of the halo looks like a perfectly round shape, but its design is only visible on one side of the nebula. Further spectroscopic observations are planned to solve the mystery. Also managed to obtain the main characteristics of the central star IC 5148. Its age reaches 8500 years, the average temperature is 11,500 K, and the metallicity is at the level of 0.02 dex. The initial mass of the star reached 1.5 solar. The ionized hydrogen of the planetary nebula IC 5148C using the astronomers of the Very Large Telescope (VLT) made observations on the planetary nebula IC 5148. A new study indicates the presence of ionized halogen and determines the fundamental parameters of the central star.More info on NP halos here: https://arxiv.org/pdf/1810.01350.pdf
