Description

Around 1,000 L/Y away, stretching 100 L/Y long, lies the aptly named California Nebula in the constellation Perseus. The name was given due to its resemblance to the outline of the US State of California.

An emission type nebula, its vibrant glow of H-Alpha gasses is likely caused by the hot blue star XI Persei ('Menkib') near its center.
