Description

This image is dedicated to the memory of my sister-in-law, Patricia (15-Jan-1956 - 08-May-2024): From the stars we came, to the stars we'll return, you'll light the heavens, forevermore.

NGC5189 is a Planetary Nebula (PN) in the Musca constellation in the Southern skies. It is approximately 1780 light years from earth and its "S"-shaped structure gave rise to its common name "Spiral Nebula". The stars in the image were constructed from separate RGB filters and the nebula is a synthesis of RGB broadband filters and  Oxygen-III and Hydrogen-II narrowband filters. As with most PNs, they are mainly composed of ionised oxygen (blue-green in the image) and ionised hydrogen-II (red) and are ejected from a central star towards the end of their life. The star field was very dense in this region, with PixInsight reporting ~16,000 stars in the 49' x 33' image (before cropping). Usually, I make the stars less prominent in my images but gave them more emphasis here as I thought they gave a nice contrast to the nebula and a fitting backdrop for my dedication.
