Description

Markarian's Chain is a stretch of galaxies that forms part of the Virgo Galaxy Cluster. When viewed from Earth, the galaxies lie along a smoothly curved line. Charles Messier first discovered two of the galaxies, M84 (NGC4374) and M86 (NGC4406), in 1781. The other member galaxies seen in the chain were discovered by William Herschel and include NGC 4477, NGC 4473, NGC 4461, NGC 4458, NGC 4438 and NGC 4435. Most of these galaxies are elliptical and have very little internal features or structure, the presence of dust lanes is rare, so therefore, elliptical galaxies just have amorphous glowing central cores. One notable feature of the chain is NGC4435 and NGC4438 also known as 'The Eyes.' The chain of galaxies were ultimately named after the Armenian-Soviet astrophysicist, Benjamin E. Markarian, who discovered their common motion in the early 1960s.
