Description

This pair of Astrobin Debut Objects Is located in the constellation of Virgo at a declination of +3 degrees.

NGC 5636, at top, is the more interesting galaxy.  This barred ring spiral is a magnitude 11.3 galaxy located 100 million light years away.  It spans 1.3 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of only 40,000 light years.  From our view perspective, the disk is inclined about halfway between edge-on and face-on.

The 2 arms originate at opposite ends of the long bar, extending counterclockwise for just over 180 degrees.  The arms form a pseudo-ring around the bar.  This galaxy is unusual in that the typical outer region of such a galaxy is almost completely absent here.

NGC 5638 is a bit closer at 90 million light years, meaning that these 2 are likely not interacting.  This elliptical is slightly larger and brighter than NGC 5636.  The magnitude 11.2 galaxy spans 1.9 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 60,000 light years.

2 interesting edge-on spirals are also seen in the frame, UGC 9310 at left and UGC 9285 at lower right.
