I had high hopes for this image as my subframes showed the region in superb quality, but I will have to write this one off as a fail, yet still clean enough to showcase. The particular issue, which was unbeknown to me when I acquired the subframes, was that Alnitak wreaked absolute havoc on the image train! My L, R and Ha filters were fine, but the G and B filters showed a massive internal reflection. When combining the channels, the green reflection was abated, but the blue reflection creeped back up when I began to stretch the image. I tried what I could to minimize the impact of the reflection but you can only polish a turd so much.

In my previous image, I mentioned that in the near future, I wish to replace my ZWO filters and this is part of the reason. I don't know if this is whether I have the filters on the wrong way, if the quality of the filters is a mixed bag or if there is another issue (maybe my off-axis guider is causing the problem?).

I still wanted to share this image to show that not all of our imaging runs go smoothly. I had a few other images I wanted to share but their quality was unacceptable for me as I didn't have enough data on them. The winter season here in California has been atrocious and only a handful of nights provided for ideal imaging conditions. Still, I do have other images in the works and I hope to share them in the near future once I can gather enough data on them. As for this one, I will revisit it next season with higher quality filters (I'm looking to get Antlia filters to replace the ZWO ones).

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
