M101 Moon Attributed Skyglow Comparison

Description

Moon skyglow comparison with two raw frames taken 22 March 2021.

(a) Frame 5 was taken about 1:34UTC with 56% illuminated moon very high in the sky (~61-deg altitude).

(b) Frame 65 was taken about 6:34UTC with 56% illuminated moon down along the horizon (~9-deg altitude) and M101 up near the zenith.

1. Upper left is my raw Frame#65 just arbitrarily stretched to give a dark background and enough contrast to show the galaxy.

2. Upper right is the same settings applied to Frame#05 which shows the moon almost totally washes out the image.

3. Lower left is Frame#05 where I attempted to closely match the #65 histogram, showing the reduced contrast in the galaxy compared to #65 just above.

4. Lower right shows just an auto-stretch of Frame #65 that makes the light-pollution gradient evident. At this point, the moon is almost directly below the image as oriented and the frame is brighter and has a purplish color going from top to bottom.
