NGC4565 (also known as the Needle Galaxy) is a giant barred spiral galaxy in the constellation Coma Berenice, part of the Coma I Group. It presents itself perfectly edge-on, appearing like a long spindle. Along its entire length, a dark band is clearly visible, in a slightly asymmetrical position with respect to the central bulge, which makes it very similar to the Milky Way, to which it is similar both in terms of real shape and size. It is about 52 million light-years away from the Milky Way.=MsoNormalOther galaxies are also visible in the photograph. At the bottom right of NGC4565 is visible NGC4562, which is a barred spiral galaxy also part of the Coma I Group, located at an estimated distance between 78 and 37 million LY from the Milky Way, depending on whether it is estimated using its velocity in relation to the diffuse cosmological background or the redshift, and prospectively close to this IC3533 (395 million LY from us). Above and to the right you can also see IC 3571 (56 million LY from us), IC3582 (308 million LY from us) IC3546 (201 million LY from us), IC3543 (74 million LY from us), NGC4555 ( 310 million LY from us), IC3536 (490 million LY from us) and IC3531 (65 million LY from us).

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
Promotions by Reviewers When 3 distinct Reviewers promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for IOTD status.
Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
