Description

M42 in a modified Hubble Palette showing off some core details. Being only 1500 light years away, the Orion Nebula is the closest stellar nursery to Earth. The nebula is an enormous cloud of dust and gas where vast numbers of new stars are being forged. The four massive young stars in the core shape the nebula. They are referred to as the Trapezium due to their trapezoidal configuration shape the nebula. Ultraviolet light generated by the Trapezium is carving a cavity in the nebula.
