I decided to revisit Orion after a few years experience of astrophotography. This was the first DSO I shot when I started out with a Fujifilm XT20 and 55-200mm telephoto lens. I was curious to see how this object would turn with my current equipment. Sadly, I struggled here. My core was blown and this prevented me from stretching well. I was able to get some background dust but felt I had to tamper down on my aggression and had to settle for only a few stretches. I masked the nebula in an attempt to pull some detail surrounding it but couldn't do too much as a weird dark ring was starting to become very obvious. I still find it ironic M42 is touted as a beginner nebula. Yes, easy to find but very difficult to image properly and process. I settled with the Foraxx palette as I was not happy with SHO/HOS/HOO combinations. Maybe in a few years time when I learn different imaging techniques for this target I'll return but for now I'll settle with this result.

Description: This was shot with a Fujifilm XT20 and 55-200mm telephoto lens. I believe the acquisition time was about 1-2 hours. This was my first target when entering the hobby and tried my best to use and learn photoshop for processing. Comparing then and now is pretty incredible to see.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
Promotions by Reviewers When 3 distinct Reviewers promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for IOTD status.
Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
