Description

The Sun is a massive, hot ball of plasma, inflated and heated by energy produced by nuclear fusion reactions at its core. Every second, the Sun's core fuses about 600 million tons of hydrogen into helium and converts 4 million tons of matter into energy. Part of this energy is emitted from its surface as visible light, ultraviolet, and infrared radiation, providing most of the energy for life on Earth.

Notable features seen in the surface images are sunspots, plage and flares. Prominences are also visible on the limb. Personally, I prefer Mono Solar images as the Sun is not actually a yellow/orange sphere but emits white light.

The Sun imaged from home on 20 April, 2024 using a Coronado 60mm Double-stacked Hydrogen Alpha (656.3nm) Solarmax telescope, ASI174MM Mono camera and a SkyWatcher EQ5 motorised mount. Processed using Autostakkert and Adobe Photoshop.
