Been thinking about this for a while. Say you have worked a particular target, like M45, in the past. You like the image but now you have better equipment or simply spend a lot more integration time on it and you end up with a much nicer image. Do you create a new revision on your existing upload here and adjust the acquisition details (knowing the prior revision info is now invalid) or do you create a new one? Or do you create a new revision and remove all the old revisions?

Hi,

this is explained in the image revision FAQ that are linked from the upload page.

However, I understand it's not as black and white as the FAQ puts it. It depends on how you perceive the continuity of the project, and it's a bit subjective, and this is why AstroBin does not enforce these guidelines.

Personally, I think that if you added some data using the same equipment or equipment that is very similar, it feels like a new revision.

But if I got some much nicer equipment, and got a lot of data for it, and still decided to use some of the old data with other equipment, it might warrant for a whole new image.

Hope this helps a bit!

Salvatore, thank you for replying to this topic.
Posting crops or reprocessed color palettes of previously posted images is the single most abused "guideline" on Astrobin.
Adding a few frames years later to new image data taken with improved gear and skills is harmless enough most of the time, but its demoralizing to those of us that follow the rules to see these types of re posted images win awards again and again.

That is an important topic. Thanks to Salvatore for clarifying. But it does not appear that all users are aware.
Proposal: Before an image is sent to the IOTD pipeline the policy should pop up and the user should confirm that he/she has read and understood and only then the image should be released to the IOTD pipeline.

Yes, I'm sure this is the case. However, the image revision etiquette is linked right there on the Uploader page. Unfortunately tho, running a semi-popular website like this one, and working close to the field UX in my previous career, has taught me that many people will simply not read anything online except the one or two words on the buttons they're clicking.

Your suggestion regarding a pop-up with the policy when submitting for IOTD/TP consideration has a few problems:

1. Many people won't read it anyway
2. It will annoy the people who know about this and now have to click it away
3. Many people have automatic submission enabled, so they are not actively submitting

I'm open to alternative suggestions and I will also think about this.

Thanks!

Hello Salvatore,
a non-intrusive way could be to send a message to users who have just submitted an image to IOTD (manually or automatically):
- saying that the image is now in the IOTD pipeline (such a message is already sent) but with the additional wording "It is necessary to read and understand the IOTD policy and to comply to it" plus adding the link
- make this message not optional i.e. it is always sent
