Greetings, All:

I would very much appreciate some help with a perplexing issue with playing an AstroBin video upload of mine on Firefox.  I am able to play the video on Chrome and Edge without issue.  Salvatore tells me that he can play it on Firefox.  Obviously, there is some setting or some other problem with my installation of Firefox.  I've noted the issue on several different computers of mine.

Here is the video:
https://www.astrobin.com/3pwqmn/

(I'll be adding more information about the video to the AstroBin page once I get past this issue.)

Can you play this video, particularly on Firefox?

I created a series of PNG files first in PixInsight using Blink.  I then cropped them and adjusted the black and white levels in PixInsight using the Image Container for automation.

I created an mp4 video file using ffmeg, which I am newly learning.  Here is the command line I settled on:

> ffmpeg -y -r 12 -i Blink%05d.png -vcodec libx264 AsteroidShort01.mp4

Also note that I am using the latest version of Firefox: 125.0.1 (64-bit)

Has somebody else run into this issue with Firefox and fixed it?  I've looked through several online help page on this topic, but nothing I have done so far has helped.

Thank you very much for your help with this, and I look forward to hearing your advice and suggestions.

Best Regards,
Ben

I use Firefox and uploaded a video yesterday. It was rendered in Photoshop (using defaults). - no issues at all uploading and viewing on Astrobin.

Totality timelapse

Your video however, doesn't play. When I right-click it and "Play video in new browser tab" I get the following message:
image.png
So maybe try different render parameters - your video is over 300MB which might be part of the problem.

Good luck!

VLC does not play the video at all while Media Player Classic shows something but at an irregular pace. Both software maxes my CPU while trying to play the file. So there must be a problem with your file or the encoding settings you have used are extremely demanding. On the other hand, Bart's video plays just fine within Firefox.

For what it’s worth, it does not play for me either however I’m on my iPad which pretty much always plays videos. Here is a screenshot of the error I’m getting.

BTW, Barts video loads and play immediately when I watch it.

I am running FF 125.0.2 and the video does not play either. It appears to be an encoder issue. If you go to the FF developer tools (Ctl-Shift-I  in Windows), and then pick the console tab you will see the errors.

Thank you all for your helpful responses!

I have uploaded another video, this time having scaled it down by a factor of two without noticeable loss of detail and clarity.  The current mp4 file size is 54.3 MB, and now I can view the video on the webpage.  In addition to reducing the file size, there may have also been other mysterious steps taken by ffmpeg.

I would appreciate verification that you can see it as well.  Thank you!

Best Regards,
Ben

Hi Ben
Yes, pretty sure size was the issue. The first one took at least 5 minutes in Edge to load, and I have a fast connection, but ran eventually. In FF (most recent update) it just kept trying to load. The new version loaded very quickly and ran on both browsers, no issue. Note, file size would be smaller if you could do a little noise reduction. All that noise takes up bytes, as compression assumes this is data it can't remove.

Excellent point, Rick, thank you!  I'll see what I can do about reducing the noise in each frame.

Hi Ben, I can see your video now so the size was probably the issue, not the encoding. That said even 54MB is really large and it loads slow. The image is mostly static so I think this can even be compressed to less than 5MB for viewing on the internet.

Works for me now in the latest FF build. Loads quickly and the quality looks good.

Hi Ben, I have problem with the first link then I realize that the file was 308Mb so I figure out that was the issue as because in the second post you link I could see clearly with no problem and indeed  show clearly the path of the asteroid.  Nice catch "
