Setting up NINA with ZWO EAF—Help! ZWO EAF · Oamaruastro · ... · 3 · 400 · 1

I have been using my ZWO EAF with the ASIAIR successfully for nearly two years without incident. But now I’m trying to migrate to NINA and I’m having a world of trouble. I’m not sure if it’s the EAF that’s the source of the problem, but here’s what happens: I can start off with my telescope in focus (based on using a Bahtinov mask) but when NINA starts a sequence that calls for autofocus to happen first, it takes the scope way out of focus (as part of the process) and then decides that it has “found focus” at a spot that is very much not in focus. I have played with the settings and have tried HocusFocus, but nothing seems to sort it out. Any ideas?

How does your autofocus curve look?   If it's flat on one side, you need to add backlash.   Only necessary in one direction, in or out, but not both.       If you interpolate the numbers where it's flat, you should be able to calculate how much backlash to add.      Also, binning helps.

How far out of focus it starts is determined by "Autofocus Initial offset steps" multiplied by  "auto-focus step size".   If you feel like it's going too far, you can reduce the step size as well.    I typically use 5 offset steps, but step size is very dependent on optics.

Hi,

You can turn off autofocus in your Sequencer if you are happy with focus using your Bahtinov mask but you will then need to manually refocus.

It's worth spending the time to set up your auto focus runs.

Cuiv has made this excellent guide to setting it up. I would suggest following it through to optimise your own set up before trying hocus focus

For Hocus Focus, I have found this link useful

@Oamaruastro Hello,

In the event you are still having an issue with your autofocus routine, you can also take a look at Patriot Astro's YouTube videos as he is also great at showing and teaching on this N.I.N.A  setup and use. Both he and Cuiv are great..

The above link is for Patriot Astro

Hope it helps,
