Dither Function in console app Sky-Watcher Star Adventurer 2i - WiFi · jaco · ... · 9 · 422 · 0

Could any of the SWSA2i owners please assist in the following?

I cannot get the dithering function to work via the console app.
when running an astrophotography session without dithering it runs via WiFi and even uploads these settings to the tracker when using in celestial mode.
but when adding dithering it will only run for one exposure and stops. i have noticed that this then also doesn't over right the previous settings on the tracker.

i am convinced this should work, but cannot for the life of me figure it out.

so please if any other SWSA2i owners out there please test and revert with an answer.

PS....firmware must be updated for this function, i have done this multiple times to make sure.

I think you should dither manually using the buttons on SWSA for RA and the knob for DEC, that's the only way to do proper dithering on a tracker in my opinion!

I have used the dithering function with my SWSA2i and it worked fine, haven't noticed a similar problem. Tough I decided that it wasn't providing enough benefit at some point, and stopped using it for unguided exposures. The difference dithering makes is really minimal as your tracking is not accurate enough for it to make a difference, the pixels are shifting anyway due to the things like polar alignment error, periodic error etc.

The obvious question is what you set the number of photos as, are you sure this is set to a high number or to unlimited?

If yes, there might be other things to make sure for troubleshooting:

Does the mount show any abnormal signs during when it's supposed to dither? Lights blinking etc? Could it be the motor is stalling due to low battery? You could perhaps try to power via 5V USB.

One other thing to try would be resetting to factory settings by setting to APP mode and holding down left and right arrow keys for 5 seconds until they start blinking fast (SWSA2i manual Appendix IV p.43).

Hi Jaco,

Have you tried to reset the mount to factory settings  ?
1. Turn the Mode Dial to APP mode2. Press and hold both Right/Left Button simultaneously for about 5 seconds until buttonLEDs start to blink fast.3. Release both Right/Left Button and wait until button LED start to blink slowly.
I had that kind of problem too until a good old factory reset. I remember that mine was dithering very well after that.

Regards,

Olivier

I Will double check if there are any funny responses due to a possible 5 volt power issue, although i doubt.
factory reset was done countless times.

whenever dither is selected the issue arise. also confused as to the values needed. when entering a value of 0.65 it reverts back to 0

Then I suggest you either contact the vendor you bought it from or directly ask SkyWatcher about this.

you are a GENIUS. i feel like an ASS

You hit the nail on the head regarding a 5 volt issue. I must have some faulty battery since they manage fine with normal celestial tracking, but I assume the tracker has slightly higher demands when shifting for dithering. I noticed the LED flickered slightly on the dial side. Then plugged into an external usb power supply and dithering worked flawlessly.

Now i know what the issue is and can work from here.

thanks again!!! Case closed

I'm very new still and will test if i do gain any advantage using the built in dither function now that my initial issue is resolved.

maybe auto guiding with PHD2 is eventually better, but i have a steep learning curve still to climb.

thanks again

Awesome, very glad to hear it's fixed!

Btw, I started guiding recently and apart from finding a power solution for the laptop in the field, it was much easier than I thought. I was throwing 40% of my subs away due to tracking errors; now I get to keep everything. It is a bit fiddly to set it up but it's definitely worth the effort.

Clear skies!

This works really well. Just twiddle one of the knobs every 20 exposures or so.
