Transporting an observatory dome - what should I look out for? Other · Arpad R · ... · 1 · 152 · 0

I am in a position to get an observatory dome but I am not sure what I need to transport it or how to go about securing it down.

The original owner told me that it is an old version of the pulsar dome. It's a fibreglass dome with a diameter of 2m.
It will need to be transported about 140 miles or about 225km.

Unfortunately since the observatory is old, it is not possible to disassemble further than taking the dome off the side walls.

Currently I am thinking of using a flat bed van with an internal width of 2080mm and a length of 4000mm to transport it. The original owner told me that it was delivered to him on a similar flatbed truck with a width of 2100mm.

I also had the other idea of using a "Luton van" unfortunately these are not wide enough however, would it be possible to stand the dome on the side as they are often 2200mm tall on the inside. Is the fibreglass strong enough for this? I'm worried about damage when going over a bump or a pothole.

With either of these methods, what would be the best way to secure both the dome and the sides down?

Thanks for the help!

Hey Arpad
Not real clear on the metric system or just where in the world you are but my first though is to use something like a U Haul rental truck. Most are at least 8 feet wide which will hold your 6-foot dome. Being enclosed you may not need any tie down. And they are not very expensive.
