Hello everyone, Last Sunday on a cold winter night I tried to position my mount precisely to the north. Since the Polar Star is not visible at my observation location, I tried an alignment on Jupiter. I was 6 degrees off from Jupiter and tried to bring the mount in using PlateSolve. I discovered a very noticeable object, which I originally thought it was a reflection of Jupiter. It was about the size of the Medusa Nebula and very noticeable with Hyperstar on the C11 with ASI2600 at 5 seconds exposure and auto histostretching in SharpCap. Unfortunately the weather is bad for my observation location for the next few days. This means I can't check exactly. There is no object noted in this area in Aladin. Now I'm no longer sure whether it was just a reflection and would ask you to take a quick look.
The object was with my equipment in the same field of view as one of the listed objects. Unfortunately, I can no longer say exactly which object. Either: NGC 927, IC 222, NGC 990, IC 238, NGC 1024
I would be very grateful if someone could briefly check these objects to see if the object I mentioned is in the same field of view. Request for feedback. Kind regards, Bernd from Austria |

Hi sure. Could you share coordinates? I can make you a short integration in L tonight and post it here (in approx 12 hours). Focal length is 530mm (Epsilon 160ed), full frame sensor.

The only reasonably bright object within 6 degrees (in RA) was 144P/Kushida. NGC821 is also a possible but much fainter candidate.

Oh great. Thank you very much I was traveling in this area of the sky when I noticed the object. If you could take photos of these coordinates, the object I described should be visible (unless it was just a reflection).
NGC 1024 (RA 02h 40m 30.4s / DEC +10° 57' 05") NGC 990 (RA 02h 37m 36.8s / DEC +11° 44' 49") NGC 975 (RA 02h 34m 40.5s / DEC + 9° 42' 30") IC 222 (RA 02h 23m 59.6s / DEC +11° 44' 14")
I'm really excited to see if you find anything in the pictures... Clear skies

Hi,
Only could do two panels!
Each is 16*60s of L at gain 100, ASI6200MM + E160ed; calibrated/stacked/STF :

Big diffusion halo around Jupiter!...
I'll let you check on https://nova.astrometry.net/upload for identification

Thank you very much! Yes, i think this was the object I´ve seen last Sunday. It is in the same area I´ve described above.
Can someone help me and give me tips on how to proceed here?

Unfortunately, false alarm. I suspect Jupiter just cheated his way into the picture here.

@Spacetime Pictures Thank you very much for the clarification. Unfortunately, the object I described is not visible in your two photos. I suspect that I only saw a reflection of Jupiter back then. Thank you again for your efforts.

So, the mystery of the strange object near IC222 has now finally been solved!!
It's just a dominant light reflection from my f2 hyperstar system, which only appears so prominently in exactly this area of the image.
