Thanks , Bill.  I’m a creature of habit.  I just like MaxIm, both for camera control and guiding. I’d probably still be using WordStar if it were still available.

I am using Windows RDP as main software to control my 3 remote computers. Most of the time I'm fine with it. But occasionally, I ran into some trouble. Reading between the lines, most of us seem to use 2 different software packages, which I highly recommend. My fallback solution is Chrome remote desktop. Especially on one computer, RDP seems to be switched off automatically from time to time (mostly after Windows updates, I guess). I never found a solution for this behaviour. So in this case, I even use a raspberry pi with a kvm software and a video capture card as third hardware based solution. This helped me a lot in the past.

Just for some background, I have over a decade of experience with MaxIm and used it from Version One to Version Five. In those days it was the only game in town, so to speak, so was advanced for it's day. By today's standards it is ancient and buggy (in the sense that it has poor functionality and interface design) - IMHO, a "dinosaur with a virus"  - and has changed little since the 1990s. I still used it occasionally recently since  my Planewave mount software required it for camera control while doing models but now even that need has gone away since the Planewave software can now use ASCOM camera drivers so MaxIm has now been removed from all my systems and has gone to the "dustbin of history"

I migrated to SGP for most things about 10 years back because it offered better sequencing than MaxIm and it was fine for a number of years but eventually innovation slowed at SGP and about that time NINA showed up.

NINA is free and extremely innovative and 3X better supported than SGP and 5X better than MaxIm despite the latter two being "for fee" software. That does not make sense but is a fact nonetheless.  Some folks also like Voyager but it is spendy and for my usage I can see no good reason to go to that.

I would really suggest at least trying NINA  since it costs nothing to try (or to use - it is totally free) and there are endless Youtube videos on how to use it.

Since I went remote with my setup I use AnyDesk or Windows RDP.  Keep in mind that RDP needs the remote PC to have Windows professional and have Remote Desktop Services server software running on it.  The PC at home can have the Home edition. This runs very stable and no latency at all.

AnyDesk is stable. In the first months AnyDesk asked me to buy a license but you need to fill in their request to get on their white-list and they don't bother you again.
Anydesk also has a non-installing version that you can put on a USB stick and run on any PC wherever you are.  Also versions for iPhone and iPad are very stable.
Make sure that Anydesk start-up automatically on the remote PC.

Have certainly two different systems for remote working.  If one is offline, you still have a second as a backup to continue working

Bill,

I take your points, and I may eventually move to NINA (maybe when my Maxim renewal comes up this spring.) On the other hand, I too probably qualify as a dinosaur.

I use both TeamViewer and AnyDesk to connect to my remote observatory via my Beelink mini PC and I haven't had any problems so far.

And as control software I use N.I.N.A and pegasus powerbox to do practically all the operations from taking lights, darks, bias and flats to controlling the observatory’s dome

Dear All,

I really appreciate all of the thoughtful, helpful responses you’ve provided to my simple question about how best to link to one’s remote observatory.

This underscores once again what a great, global community AstroBin has become.

Many thanks,

Bob

Chrome Remote as the main because it is free and just works.
Rust Remote as a back up because it is also free and also opensource.

My thanks again to all who responded with your very informative advice. Just to report, as of the first week in January 2024 my imaging is now reliably remote from home (a modest 15 KM from my observatory) using Chrome Remote Desktop — free and so far completely seamless and reliable.

Imaging is now fully automated with CCDAutoPilot5, the orchestra conductor for Maxim, FocusMax5, TheSkyX, Astro-Physics APCC and PinPoint 7.
