Description

NGC 3718 is located in Ursa Major at a distance of 52 million light years. Originally it was thought to be a lenticular but later images revealed arms, making it a spiral.  It is thought that it got its unusual shape from gravitational interaction with nearby  NGC 3729, another spiral galaxy located approximately 150,000 light-years from 3718. It was discovered by William Herschel in 1789. Also in the FOV is the aforementioned NGC 3729 and the small Hickson group 56 which is made up of five galaxies.
