Description

This pair of small Astrobin Debut Objects is located in the constellation of Hydra at a declination of -12 degrees.  The galaxies are too far apart to be interacting.

NGC 2884  is a magnitude 12.6 galaxy located 185 million light away.  It spans 2 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 100,000 light years.  From our view perspective, the disk is inclined about 20 degrees from edge-on.  This galaxy is classified as a lenticular but it looks more like a spiral to me, with visible structure including a mid-region ring.  Most interesting is the bright core, which has a bit of an X-shape.

NGC 2889  is a magnitude 11.5 galaxy located 160 million light away.  It spans 2 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 85,000 light years.  From our view perspective, the disk is inclined about 45 degrees from edge-on.  This galaxy has a grand spiral disk structure with one large arm that is twice as long as the other.
