Description

There are less than ten images of RCW98 that I can find on Astrobin.  Most are broadband, with one narrowband image using the same Telescope Live data as I am using here.

This is perhaps not surprising, since RCW98 is a small, faint target with very weak [OIII] so most NB palettes don't produce a very colourful image.  On the other hand the star field arond RCW98 is quite colourful and so broadband images are. perhaps, more pleasing to the eye.

In trawling through the Telescopes Live back catalogue, I noticed that RCW98 has quite a lot of [SII] and so I thought it might be fun to put together a Foraxx-inspired HSS pallettee (i.e. the Foraxx HOO with O replaced by S].  I was pleasantly surprised by the result.  While still not the most colourful of DSOs, this approach does bring more colour into the NB image of RCW98 - indeed it ends up being a little more coffee-coloured.

This actually inspires me to do more of the faint RCW targets in HSS - at least for those that have appreciable [SII].  Certainly this palette is much more tolerant of bright moon, and so it might be fun to explore.
