Description

Interacting with nearby IC5283.

Even at less than 10m, I notice this galaxy is a ring.  Very bright nucleus with a nearby bright star and another just below it.  An interesting chain of 4 faint stars is above and points toward this galaxies nucleus.  IC5283 is nearby to the left and is a narrow oval in shape, but not much detail within at full frame.  Arp photo shows a tail emerging from the end of IC5283, but I do not detect this at 10m.  When zooming in to about 70% I can see this tail well against the background sky glow.  It almost doubles the length of the galaxy, but is much fainter.  I also note some internal brightness variation along with two faint stars just off the left and bottom of the main galaxy.  Arp 298 is very clearly ring shaped.  The nearby star to the top of the nucleus appears to be imbedded in a slight halo around the nucleus.  A dark ring around the entire nucleus is apparent and then a faint extension from that star out to the ring - which wraps around the entire center and includes the second bright star just below the nucleus.  This extension is very clearly in the direction out from the nucleus and flows toward IC5283 which is otherwise well outside the ring.  The combination of the tail in IC5283 and the extension from the nucleus of NGC7469 is likely what interested Arp in the first place.

Note: other images of this pair don't show a complete ring - only very long double spiral.

Many interesting field galaxies - especially one (edge-on galaxy) near the right edge of the field (idenetified as FGC2451 @ 16 mag)
