NGC 7000 is also known as the **North America Nebula**¹²³. It is an **emission nebula** in the constellation Cygnus, about 2,590 light years away from Earth². It was discovered by **William Herschel** in 1792¹.
NGC 7000 is named because its shape resembles the continent of North America, complete with a prominent Gulf of Mexico¹²³. It is part of a large interstellar cloud of ionized hydrogen (H II region) that also includes the Pelican Nebula, separated by a dark band of dust¹. NGC 7000 is ionized by the radiation from the hot star Deneb, which lies nearby¹².
NGC 7000 has a diameter of about **120 x 100 arcminutes** and contains several bright regions and dark lanes of gas and dust¹². It has an apparent magnitude of **4.0** and can be seen with binoculars or a small telescope¹². It appears as a diffuse patch of light near the bright star Xi Cygni¹². It is best seen from the northern hemisphere during summer and autumn months².
