I have never attempted a mosaic as ambitious as this one. I'd taken a single-frame image of IC405 a year ago with my stock DSLR and 300mm F/4 lens a year ago in a single night from my light polluted yard and was disappointed with what little I could see. Compared to early successes with brighter targets like M42 and M31, this was clearly a challenge. Arguably, it was that imaging session that convinced me that I was ready to move to a cooled monochromatic camera, narrowband filters, and refractor telescope.

Even at one filter per session, I quickly realized that getting 6 panels every night was very challenging logistically! Though I began the project "early" (November) in the season, there were only so many clear nights; before I knew it I was rushing to get setup on nights in late January as the target was already at the meridian by 9 pm. In the end, I was able to gather about 4-6 hr per filter per panel. While this is less time than I had hoped for, it proved to be a good start. I had intended to get some RGB data from a local dark site, but never had the time. That will have to wait until next year!

The full resolution (>100 MP) image has some decent detail, but you'll also see some artifacts from the mosaic merge process. I'll have practice my processing efforts.

Submitted The date and time when you submitted this image for IOTD/TP consideration.	...
Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
Promotions by Reviewers When 3 distinct Reviewers promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for IOTD status.
Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
