Description

This planetary nebula consists of a faint halo with an apparent size of 90" and a brighter core with an apparent size of 65". The brighter core shows some fantastic detail, with sweeping arc like features that could be the edges of bubble like structures. The complexity of the inner core is due to the fact that the star system from which the nebula was born is the double star HD 281679. The smaller star in the pair is now a subluminous O-type star and is responsible for the nebula. The much larger companion is a giant AOIII star and is easy to see at the centre of the nebula.

When imaging this target I started too late in the year, and lost it to the March twilight. Luckily it is bright at magnitude 9.4 so the short integration time did not hurt too much. I used the Ha signal to blend in some colour and create some depth. The Ha was also used for the star luminosity, since my usual star colour run was cut short by the changing seasons.

Clear Skies,
Bob
