Description

The Tetards (IC 410)Nestled in the constellation of the Coachman, the nebula IC 410 is home to two clouds of gas and dust whose shape evokes that of tadpoles (or spermatozoa).IC 410 is an emission nebula, a huge molecular cloud about 100 light-years in diameter. If this cloud shines, it is because its atoms are excited by the radiation of the stars of the cluster NGC 1893. These young stars, only 4 million years old, spew strong stellar winds that also sculpt two cosmic tadpoles. These are curious structures made of denser gas and dust. They measure about 10 light-years. Blown by stellar winds, the tail of these tadpoles stretches opposite the core of the star cluster NGC 1893.
