Description

RCW 61, also known as Gum 41, is a captivating emission nebula nestled within the vast Centaurus constellation roughly 6,500 light-years from Earth. Bathed in the energetic light of a powerful binary star system, HD 100099, this close-knit pair comprises two rare O-type stars, known for their extreme luminosity and brief lifespans. Their immense energy output shapes the surrounding gas and carves out a cavity, influencing the nebula's circular form. While often referred to as the "feet" of the whimsical Running Chicken Nebula (IC 2948), RCW 61 boasts a celestial charm of its own. Its delicate tendrils and the illuminating presence of the central binary star system make it a rewarding celestial subject to image.
