Description

NGC7293 is also known as the Helix Nebula or the Eye of God or also the Eye of Sauron.  It is a planetary nebula similar to the Ring nebula and the Dumbbell Nebula, but the closest of this type of nebula to Earth at roughly 655 light years away.  It's located in the constellation of Aquarius and appears relatively low in the sky in the northern hemisphere.  It has what are referred to as "cometary knots" that originate in a core of neutral molecular gas and protrude radially away from the central star. Each knot is roughly the size of our solar system. Planetary nebulae form when an intermediate or small sized star sheds its outer atmosphere near the end of its life. The central star which is destined to become a white dwarf causes the outer shell of expanding gasses to fluoresce with the rich colors seen here.
