Description

M81, also known as Bode's Galaxy, was discovered in 1774 by Johann Elert Bode. It lies within the Ursa Major constellation, some 12 million light years away from us. It is 90,000 light years in diameter and is thought to contain about 250 billion stars. A key feature is the large central bulge, home to a supermassive black hole 15 times larger than the one at the centre of our own Milky Way!
