Description

Geminids Meteor Shower
-----------------------------------
The Geminids meteor shower, Tuesday 14 December 2021 taken from Bathurst in NSW, Australia. This is a somewhat abstract (and maybe a little indulgent) attempt at an alternative presentation of this annual meteor shower. The camera was running for about two hours in the early hours of Tuesday morning and of the 214 frames captured, 37 frames had either a meteor (two of) or satellite trails (many). There are only two meteors visible and a number of faint satellite trails.

To process the data for this image, the StarStax software was used to combine the frames with no further processing applied. My Canon 60Da DSLR with EF200mm lens was used for the project with the camera tripod mounted so no tracking.. Settings were ISO3200 and 20 second exposures.

The Geminids meteor shower is so called as the meteors appear to radiate from a point within the constellation of Gemini (the Twins). It is an annual event that is triggered when the Earth passes through a stream of particles in space associated with a near Earth object (NEO) 3200 Phaethon. This is an asteroid that has left a trail of dust particles in space, possibly from a collision with another object. The dust particles burn up when they enter Earth's atmosphere and create the (sometimes) sparkling fireballs that we see as meteors.

Note that NEO is nothing to, or to be confused with, the "One" - the savior of Zion (Matrix fans will understand ! ).
