Description

I wanted to take a different look at M42 that included all of the faint H-a regions south and east of the main complex, and make them an important part of the story. Admittedly not very traditional (or as pretty with respect to the main complex) but my intention is to come back later for a separate tighter LRGB version.

This was fairly difficult for several reasons. One is the short span of time that M42 is high enough to shoot, compounded by El Nino clouds. The next reason was the Sii signal. It turns out to be quite strong in the areas of interest, being an almost exact tracer for the extended H-a nebula. This had the effect of taking those areas into color directions I did not want to go. Lastly, the extended Oiii is noisy and presented its own challenge, especially as I explored HOO options. And lastly of course the dynamic range. While I wanted the extended nebula I was not wanting to write off the Trapezium area.
