Description

The Elephant's Trunk Nebula (IC1396) is located in the constellation Cepheus. In certain images, it resembles an elephant's trunk, from which it got its name. The nebula is said to be a nursery of stars, where new stars are born from dense clouds of gas and dust. It is an elegant, even artistic example of the wonders and complexity of our universe.

When Elefant's Trunk is presented in a sort of vertical position, it resembles a human figure dressed in a hood or cloak. Such a sight may have remained in the minds of many and created an interest and charm in the wonders of space. Some consider the Elefant's Trunk Nebula human figure to be a cosmic ghost or a mystical sorcerer. Mysticism has been involved in astronomy since ancient times. Mystical interpretations and fabrications of fables emphasize people's need to explain things beyond their understanding with the help of imagination. The interpretations brought by mysticism have possibly turned into mythological stories of astronomy over time. A large number of constellations still bear familiar names from mythology.

The nebula is located approximately 2,400-2,600 light-years from Earth. Its diameter is about 20 light years.
