Description

Galaxies in Orion!.  Right on the edge of the Milky Way near Bellatrix.  I also notice a group of PGC/UGC galaxies nearby to the west.  The star field is very interesting.  A nice curving chain of 5 (or 6 if you count one of them as double) gradually dimmer stars points right at this group of galaxies.  The galaxies themselves are all very small.  NGC1875 (34A) is the biggest and the brightest.  It appears as a very slightly oval faint patch with a uniform bright central nucleus.  Three others follow to the east, all much smaller than 1875.  The three small galaxies are not annotated in SC, but they are listed as HCG 34D (18.3m),HCG 34C (17.1m) and HCG 34B (17.4m).  When zoomed in to 200x, the last two little galaxies seem  to be involved with each other as there appears to be a very faint hazy bridge that joins both oval spots together.  The little galaxy (34D) closest to 1875 does not appear involved with any of the other galaxies.  It's indistinguishable from a small star.

On Arp's original catalog image, HCG 34C is clearly a barred spiral galaxy.  It has a curving outer arm that seems directed right at nearby HCG 34B.  I can make out the curving shape from HCG 34C, but no hint apparent that it's a spiral.
