Description

NGC 2903 is a barred spiral in Leo and was discovered by William Herschel in 1784.  Additionally, the designation of NGC 2905 was given to a luminous knot in the northeastern spiral arm (somewhat brighter patch to the left of the core in the image).  NGC 2903 bar structure appears stronger in the near infrared band and the galaxy as a whole is inclined at a 60-degree angle as viewed from Earth.  It is located about 30 million light years away as a member of the Virgo Supercluster.  The fainter elliptical galaxy below NGC 2903 is UGC 5086 located much closer at a distance of about 1.86 million light years.
