Description

M51 is a classic target both for visual observers and astrophotographers. The designation M51 actually refers to 2 different galaxies: the blue spiral on the left and yellow dwarf galaxy NGC 5195 (or M51b) on the right. These two galaxies gravitationally interact with each other, which gives rise to the beautiful spiral arm structure in the main galaxy.

This is a tight crop around the center of the field, intended to show fine detail. The luminance image was 2X drizzle stacked, deconvolved and resampled back to the original resolution for further processing.
