Description

This pair of galaxies are fairly large as a group.  NGC1253 is the northern and larger one while NGC1253A is to the south and smaller.  Both of them appear to be pretty distorted spirals with only remnants of arms visible.  NGC1253 has a more distinct arm remnant on the north side, but the south side just shows two parallel streams of material.  The western edge also shows some definition.  A slightly brighter nucleus can be seen within a very extended halo.  A faint star very near the nucleus and then a brighter one near the southern edge.  A dark area separates the two galaxies where a single 12.2m star lives.  NGC1253A is much smaller, elongated and also has a faint nucleus.  It also appears to have an arm at right-angles to the main arm (main arm oriented about E/W but curves like a flat "S", where the little spur is to the north and straight).  As the session progresses near 45 minutes, this spur takes on the appearance of a fish hook (in my capture its shaped sort of like an "L" or an upside down question mark but is a brighter section of the halo/arms. Appears to be a small group of 4 faint galaxies off to the west of NGC1253 that form a little diamond or parallelogram.  Very interesting galaxy group.  SC only annotates PGC 1082999 @ 17.9m.
