Description

Cocoon Nebula (IC 5146)

Captured September 30, 2018

3 hours integration

The Cocoon Nebula is a relatively small emission nebula (15 light-years wide) located in the constellation Cygnus, 4,000 light years away. The red color is due to hydrogen gas excited by young, hot stars, while the outer blue edge is caused by blue starlight reflecting off the surrounding dust. Dark nebula Barnard 168 can be seen trailing off to the right of the image.
