This is the third time I try to solve this magnificent globular cluster.

Omega Centauri or now NGC 5139 was identified in 1677 by Edmond Halley as a star, hence this initial calling which is a designation proper to a star. It was John Herschel in the 1830s who identified it as a globular cluster and resolved it into individual stars.

NGC 5139 is therefore in the constellation Centaurus (southern hemisphere), about 15000 light-years of our solar system. It is almost as old as the universe, 12 billion years old, and contains nearly 10 million stars on a diameter of 150 light-years.

Current studies suggest that NGC 5139 is the remaining core of a dwarf galaxy, the remains of which would have merged with the surrounding Milky Way.

Omega Centauri ou maintenant NGC 5139 fut identifié en 1677 par Edmond Halley comme une étoile, d'où cette appelation initiale qui est une désignation propre à une étoile. C'est John Herschel, dans les années 1830, qui l'identifia comme amas globulaire et le résolut en étoiles individuelles.

NGC 5139 se trouve donc dans la constellation du Centaure (hémisphère sud), à environ 15000 années-lumière de notre système solaire. Il est presque aussi vieux que l'univers, 12 milliards d'années, et contient près de 10 millions d'étoiles sur un diamètre de 150 années-lumière.

D'après les études en cours, il est émis l'hypothèse que NGC 5139 serait le coeur restant d'une galaxie naine dont les restes auraient fusionné avec la Voie Lactée alentour.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.

Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
