Description

Alpha Crucis, usually called Acrux, is a ternary system whose elements can only be solved with sophisticated equipment. These are Acrux A and Acrux B, and Acrux A is itself a binary star.

On the image, the closest star to Acrux is HD 108250 (HR 4729) sometimes called Alpha Crucis C, but it looks like it's more like an optical double because it's well located further...

Acrux is a very important star for observers in the southern hemisphere, as the line drawn from Gacrux points to the south celestial pole.

At the bottom of the image, you will notice the presence of a dark area, it is a small part of the largest dark nebula, the Coal Sack.
