Description

Caldwell 49 or the Rosette nebula is a rather bright H2-region located in the molecular cloud in Monoceros. The central stars form the open cluster NGC 2244 and have formed from this nebula. There are numerous young stars that are only visible in X-ray telescopes. Also, there seems to be a dissent about wether the nebula is spherical (and, thus, designates a Strömgren-Sphere) or a flat disc (which would fit better to a modelling of the central "clear" space). It's always interesting to know what we don't.
