Description

The Heart Nebula (also known as the Running dog nebula), IC 1805, Sharpless 2-190, is one of the most photographed objects of the sky, and with very good reasons. The core of the nebula, hosting the star cluster Collinder 26 (alternatively: Melotte 15), is particularly spectacular and I propose it to you here in a starless version.

The picture is a pure HOO, recorded on 16 and 17 October 2022 from my backyard in Vienna.

IC1807 is 7500 light years away from the Earth and is located in the Perseus Arm of the Milky Way.
It was discovered by William Herschel on 3 November 1787.

The full nebula spans almost 2 degrees in the sky, covering an area four times that of the diameter of the full moon. Its estimated cross-size is 200 light years.
