Description

Often ignored because of the nearby M81 and M82, Coddington's Nebula lies north of the bowl of the Big Dipper. IC 2574 is part of the M81 group of galaxies and is classified as a dwarf spiral at a distance of 13 million light years.

There are some intense star forming regions that were easy to blow out in processing. My Ha signal was a bit of a disappointment given the nebulosity in other images around the web. I thought there was an interesting loop of stars nearby and used that to determine my cropping.

It was discovered by Edwin Coddington in 1898. Honestly, I thought there was going to be some profound link to the astronomer or interesting story given its name, but I cannot see any reason why it has the special moniker.
