Description

Another often imaged target.  Also known as Caldwell 27 or Sharpless 105 - or even sometimes the Euro Nebula b/c of the similarity to the symbol for a Euro

The nebula is about 5000LY away, so around the time the photons that made this image began their journey, Stonehenge had started being built in the UK, writing had just been invented in Mesopotamia, a pine that still grows in California was being germinated (!), the Harappan period was happening in the Indus Valley (w drainage and sewage in place), and in the Eastern Mediterranean, the Cycladic & Minoan civilisations were rising while Troy was also apparently being founded.

This image was taken while there is still no astronomical darkness here in the UK, from Bortle 9.  It clearly needs more data, especially in Oiii which is particularly rewarding here, showing more structure in the Crescent itself (the collision of two different speed emission clouds) as well as a planetary nebula called the Soap Bubble Nebula (PN G75.5+1.7?)  not too far away from it (which was first noticed by an amateur astronomer Dave Jurasevich only 15y ago!).

So this is a target which I do hope to go back to for more data later in the year, ideally with an Oiii filter added to the setup.

Interestingly, LBN193 and NGC6881 are also not too far away as future targets.
