Description

I finally decided that Maine was the place to be only 2 days before the Eclipse. Prior to that, Northern Vermont seemed like a safe bet. After watching the weather all week, it became clear that high clouds may well threaten the eclipse view in Vermont so with little extra travel time, I rerouted to Jackman with a stop on the way in Portland. After leaving the hotel at 3am we arrived in Jackman at 6:30 and took about 30 minutes to find an out of the way spot on the North end of town that had not been discovered by the crowds in town.

Technically, the day went fairly well. I bumped the scope off target at first contact and the quick realignment was sub par so I was dealing with drift throughout. I also had an android program calling out contacts but as Second Contact arrived I used my phone to video the eclipse which stopped the call outs making me miss taking off the filter at second contact. The result was missing imaging the Diamond Ring and Baily's Beads at Second Contact. I put the phone down and enjoyed the eclipse experience visualy until Third Contact.

We were treated to a spectacular show of shadow bands on the recent snowfall and the whole event passed without a cloud in the sky. The Eclipse came and went far too quickly. If only it could have lasted much longer. When's the next one?
