Description

In the centre of this image, very small, are two interacting galaxies. One is face-on and the other edge-on. They are entry 302 in Arp's catalogue of peculiar galaxies.

This object is rather small for my imaging system but it was identified as the "Object of Interest" for May 2024 by the Deep Sky Section of the British Astronomical Association, so I thought I'd have a go at it. In fact my filed of view is sufficiently large that I captured another Arp, number 177, about 60% of the way from Arp 302 to the bottom edge.

Arp 302 turns out to be an interesting object: it is very luminous in the infrared (IR). According to a report in Astrophysical Journal Letters in 1997 it has the highest CO (carbon monoxide) luminosity known. The large spatial extent of the CO emission distinguishes it from starburst galaxies. Arp 302 is assumed to be in a pre-starburst phase.
