Description

This is ngc 918, a faint face-on SBc spiral in Aries. This part of the sky is never very dark from my location but this summer it has been a real nightmare. I have tried several times to get some decent exposures and this is the best I have managed so far.

It is admittedly very faint, mag 15, with a surface brightness of 16.9 mag per square arc min. It's about 4' x 2' in size, so reasonable.

Why am I interested in it? Well, it should show some very interesting areas of 'galactic cirrus', otherwise known as the IFN!

It is a faint region of the IFN, being a long way from the galactic pole but I

always like a nice challenge.

This exposure is the sum of 32 x 3 minute exposures and as far as I can see, no sign of the IFN. Not surprising really as I had to do a lot of processing on the image to get rid of light pollution and gradients.
