Description

Here is the Crescent Nebula, NGC 6888, in Cygnus.

The central star is a Wolf-Rayet star (WR 136) which is shedding its outer envelope in a strong stellar wind. The nebula's complex structures are probably the result of this strong wind interacting with material ejected in an earlier phase. The result of this interaction is a shell and two shock waves, one moving outward and one moving inward. Burning fuel at a prodigious rate and near the end of its stellar life this star should ultimately go out with a bang in a spectacular supernova explosion.

A slight diversion from my usual field of interest but a very interesting subject, nonetheless.

Imaged with no filtration, this is the result of 30 x 3 minute exposures through my 10" f4.8 Newtonian, on a reasonably transparent night back at the end of June.
